GuildHE and GuildHE Research have jointly responded to Professor Sir Adrian Smith’s call for evidence on the design of future UK funding schemes for international collaboration, innovation and curiosity-driven blue-skies research the recent consultation, being undertaken on behalf of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

While we welcome an emphasis on international collaboration, we argue that funding for such collaboration must embrace the full diversity of the UK R&D landscape wherever it is found, and support all academic disciplines, especially social sciences, arts and humanities. At the same time, the UK should not focus exclusively on attracting only the “brightest and the best” to the UK; Support for emerging talent will deliver longer-term gains.
