Academic Writing Workshop with Dr Diana Damian Martin

Tuesday 2 December, 2.00 – 5.00pm

Finish Academic Writing Month on a high with this workshop led by Dr Diana Damian Martin! This two-part session will begin by discussing modes of academic writing, with a focus on nonstandard and creative approaches. How do we maintain rigour, but work with the broad range of modes of writing appropriate to our research? How do creative methods offer ways in to writing practice for academic contexts? How might our own writing journeys inform how we approach, and engage, with academic writing? The second half will be a facilitated writing session where participants have the opportunity to apply these approaches together in an hour of power writing. Participants are invited to bring something they want to progress with or work on during this time.

The workshop will be held on Zoom and we have 25 spaces to offer to our PGR students, so please do register as soon as possible! To register, please complete this form by Tuesday 18 November.

Diana is a researcher, educator and cultural organiser, and a programme lead and senior lecturer in performance at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

GuildHE Research writing tips on LinkedIn - send us your tips!

We’ll be sharing tips and talking about writing across the month over on our LinkedIn channel, so do give us a follow to check that out! We would love these tips to come from you, so that we can share with our vibrant community the brilliant ways postgraduate researchers at GHE Research and Doctoral Training Alliance institutions capture and communicate their research. It's a really great way to engage with other PGRs and researchers in our community, learn more about how to approach your writing, and get motivated. Submit your writing tips here

Writing workshops and sessions with Doctoral Training Alliance

During the month of November, Doctoral Training Alliance will run two workshops plus regular ‘Power Hour of Writing Sessions’ which will be open to PGR students at GuildHE Research institutions. If you would like to join any of these sessions, please email [email protected] to receive joining instructions.

Writing a Literature Review: Structure, synthesis, and critical engagement

Tuesday 4 November 2025, 10.30 am – 3.30pm

This one-day online session offers dedicated time and support for postgraduate researchers to develop their literature reviews with clarity and confidence. Through guided input on what a literature review is (and isn’t), common structural approaches (chronological, thematic), and how to align your review with your research questions, participants will gain practical strategies for critical synthesis. The session includes peer exchange on common challenges and focused writing time to make real progress on your review.

Writing blogs during your PhD

Tuesday 18 November 2025, 2.00 – 3.30pm

This practical workshop explores how writing blogs can support your development as a PGR. Whether you're sharing your research or reflecting on your personal journey, blog writing offers a powerful way to build your online presence, connect with wider audiences, and foster a reflective mindset. We'll explore two key blog styles: research-focused and reflective blogs – and discuss what makes blog writing impactful and engaging. You will also have the chance to generate ideas and begin outlining your own blog post.

Power Hour of Writing sessions

Every Friday during November 2025, 10:00 – 11:00am

DTA’s Power Hour of Writing sessions aim to foster a sense of community among researchers. For the first five minutes at the start of the session, participants briefly introduce themselves and share their writing objectives for the hour. Afterwards, everyone works on their thesis and in the last five minutes shares their progress. The Power Hour technique is all about focus, discipline, and being free from distractions. The aim is to supplement the work PGRs are already doing and create an online community where we can all read/write individually, yet together. PGRs from all stages of their PhD are welcome to attend.
