Prospective students making decisions today can choose courses from major providers in professional subject areas including art, design and media, music and the performing arts, agriculture and food, education, business and law, theology, the built environment, and health and sports, with support from the thousands of higher education staff dedicated to delivering first-rate opportunities for students.

Today’s UCAS data showing a decline in applications for teacher training courses is of concern, as is an increase in nursing applications of only 1%.

Our 60+ member universities, colleges, and institutes are perfectly placed to deliver the vital public sector skills needed and ensure a strong pipeline into the professions. GuildHE and its members are keen and ready to work with government to help deliver its ambitions for improved public services.

Communication #3

This year’s UCAS data saw a significant decline in applications from mature students. Cost of living pressures are a concern for many prospective students and particularly for mature applicants.

To support students and help them thrive, GuildHE are calling for the Department for Education to work together with representative bodies to reform student support including:

  • Reinstate maintenance grants for students from lower socio-economic groups
  • Ensure that student loans cover basic student living costs and that all students that need it are eligible by revising the parental income threshold
