In an article for Arts Professional, Dr Kate Wicklow writes that the Government’s plan to cut support for creative degrees will have a negative impact on social mobility and innovation.
The full article 'Miscalculating value: the dangerous cost of cutting creative HE' can be viewed on the Arts Professional website. In it, Dr Kate Wicklow, GuildHE's Director of Policy and Strategy, said:
At GuildHE, we argue this policy shift is counterproductive, especially as we continue engaging Government bodies for a more sophisticated interpretation of graduate data. Stripping support from institutions cultivating creative and digital talent risks a false economy that will ultimately hinder long-term regional innovation, productivity, and prosperity.
Through our upcoming Creative HE Strategy, we intend to challenge the Government, industry partners, and higher education providers to determine how we can best meet the nation's future cultural and creative demands. The strategy will include a focus on sustaining momentum in social mobility and broadening access to the sector for individuals from diverse backgrounds. To safeguard our nation’s creative future, Government, industry, and higher education must now unite in commitment – because without adequate support and funding, the remarkable progress we have achieved remains at critical risk.
