In this Times Higher Education article, GuildHE CEO Dr Brooke Storer-Church commented on the government's announcement of a consultation on introducing minimum entry requirements for the whole higher education sector.

The Government setting minimum entry requirements would diminish higher education institutions' abilities to determine who is capable of undertaking higher education, infringing on their institutional autonomy and intellectual authority.

Such requirements are at danger of equating prior attainment with future potential capability, which risks undoing years of successful widening access efforts by restricting entry to more advantaged students and those who follow traditional routes into higher education.

This would negatively impact equality of opportunity for all, which GuildHE recognises as central to ensuring a strong and just democratic society, and the Government itself has pledged commitment to delivering.
